One Piece: 10 Basic Mistakes Luffy Keeps Making

Monkey D. Luffy was the main protagonist of the One Piece universe and the captain of the Straw Hat pirates. Possessing strength belied by his motley appearance, the hero has accrued a massive bounty and become a legend on the seas.

Despite his formidable reputation and a lengthy list of successes, Luffy has often made critical blunders or harbored sentiments that detract from the prosperity and safety of those he has sworn to protect. Through analyzing instances of his most egregious mistakes, we can better appreciate the flaws behind the series' most persevering pirate.

10 He Constantly Fights Enemies Out Beyond His Ability

Perhaps Luffy's most frequently crippling flaw is for the fact that he willingly confronts opponents vastly beyond his skill. This was demonstrated at numerous points throughout the series, such as through his lopsided defeat against Aokiji.

Were it not for the marine's mercy, Luffy would have been executed for the threat he might have posed in the future to the world government. His recklessness proved costly again during the events of the Alabasta arc, where his low knowledge of Crocodile's physiology nearly got him killed.

9 He Needlessly Attacks His Friends

While Luffy often claims to have his friends' best interest in mind, he is not beyond attacking them to disastrous results. This was observed through his fight against Zoro at Whiskey Peak, where he accused him of mowing down their "cordial hosts" despite the swordsman's statements to the contrary.

It was also proven through his battle against Usopp during the Water Seven arc, where he did not attempt to sway the sniper's mind from abandoning the Going Merry. The wounds he dealt with his former friend exacerbated the multiple beatings Usopp already received from the Franky Family.

8 He Often Gets Side-Tracked From His Goal Of Finding The One Piece

Luffy searched for the One Piece so that he might be considered the King of the Pirates. He stated this goal to almost every stranger he came across both friend and foe alike.

Despite the relative urgency in his quest as the Straw Hats face immeasurable competition, Luffy is easily side-tracked and inclined to pursue irrelevant objectives on a whim. This was demonstrated through his excitement in uncovering Sky Island despite its having nothing to do with his grander pursuit.

7 He Gets Easily Over-Attached To Strangers

Luffy is highly impressionable and can become easily over-attached to strangers. This was demonstrated in several instances, such as through his chivalry toward Boodle and the significant assistance he afforded to Vivi.

His allegiance to strangers can reach such absurd degrees that it places his own crew in imminent peril. For instance, he chose Tonjit's horse over Chopper when recruiting a crewmate to his side during the Davy Back competition against the Foxy Pirates. This was an extraordinarily irresponsible choice that nearly enslaved the group for generations.

6 He Lets His Enemies Live

Though letting his enemies live is within the gullible and optimistic nature of Luffy's character, it nonetheless portends severe consequences for those he intends to save.

For example, after he dominated Kuro and forced his pirates back into their ships, the Straw Hats themselves vacated the area. Technically, nothing was preventing the villain from returning to Syrup Village and butchering every resident inside. Considering his dishonorable inclinations and his targets' inability to defend themselves independently, Luffy's mercy was ill-conceived.

5 He Is Trusting To A Fault

Luffy is trusting to a fault, an inhibition that lowers his defenses at the most inopportune moments. An example comes from his betrayal at the hand of Lucci and the other CP9 agents since he was completely unprepared to stop them once their identities had been revealed.

His willingness to allow Nico Robin on board the Going Merry was also proven even though she worked for Baroque Works under Crocodile not even a week prior. Though this instance would prove propitious, it could have yielded disastrous consequences, as Aokiji once warned.

4 He Harasses People To Either Join Or Stays On His Crew

When finding prospective crewmates, Luffy's persistence is to an unnerving degree. He repeatedly insisted that Chopper join the crew, pressuring him until he finally caved to his desires and agreed to come on board the Going Merry.

He harassed Nami with similar relentlessness and with equal success. However, she stole his ship and betrayed him to the Arlong pirates before her allegiances were adequately procured, providing another example of how Luffy's gullibility and trust have the potential to cost him dearly.

3 He Comes Up With Potentially Insulting Nicknames For Everyone

Luffy is often prone to identify interesting characters he comes across with particular nicknames. These monikers range from being endearing to demeaning depending on the target he is actively addressing, whether friend or foe.

In certain instances, his labels can arouse the venom of their recipients and even evoke physical abuse. An example comes through how he addresses Kureha for her age, much to her distaste and ire. Oftentimes, Luffy will be cudgeled over the head for these transgressions though he fails to learn from his mistake.

2 He Is Too Open About Being A Pirate

Regardless of the debatable merits of being a pirate, it is a controversial practice and for a good reason. Many of Luffy's competitors are not as nearly honorable or merciful as he is, preferring a more traditionally savage take on the seafaring profession.

Nonetheless, the Straw Hat captain openly introduces himself and his friends to be pirates. Considering their sizable bounties issued by the World Government, this is a foolhardy tactic that places the group at unnecessary risk to gain a modicum of prestige and placate his adventurous sensibilities.

1 Luffy's Excessive Recklessness Puts Everyone At Risk

Luffy's excessive reckless and sentiment puts even the most intelligent members of the Straw Hat pirates at risk for the choices he makes. This was demonstrated through his interest in seeing the execution site of Gol D. Roger for himself despite the many enemies he had already obtained by the time.

As a result, the Straw Hat pirates only made a narrow escape from their murderous pursuers, one facilitated by a providential storm. Unfortunately, since the captain wasn't punished for his temerity, he learned a precious little from his stunning stroke of fortune.
