Set in Tokyo, Japan, Bloody Escape chronicles the journey of Kisaragi, a human who undergoes genetic modification, equipping his body with lethal weaponry. During his flight, Kisaragi kills one of the yakuza leaders, making him a high-priority target of the organization. A vampire group called the Immortal Knights also joins the hunt, while simultaneously concocting a scheme to take over control of the city from the infamous criminal organization.

A number of prominent industry figures are involved with the production. Shingo Nagai, who co-wrote the scripts for the popular fantasy-comedy series BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, So I'll Max Out My Defense, co-writes the screenplay with Taniguchi. Shimadoriru (Danganronpa Togami light novels) and Yusuke Kozaki (Pokemon Journeys: The Series) create the character designs. Satoshi Oyamada, who is known for their work on the Ajin anime series, serves as the film's CG director. Kotaro Nakagawa, who created the soundtrack for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, composes the music. Yuki Ono (The Devil Is a Part-Timer, Food Wars!) stars as main character Kisaragi.

Bloody Escape was originally announced in March this year, just two months after Taniguchi's One Piece Film: Red completed its extended Japanese theatrical run. Serving as a standalone adventure, this movie revolves around Luffy's childhood friend Uta and her dream of reforming the world through music. Film: Red has been an unprecedented success for Toei both domestically and internationally, raking in over $246.5 million in worldwide box office earnings. It has even replaced Studio Ghibli's lauded fantasy epic, Princess Mononoke, as Japan's seventh-highest grossing film of all time. Film: Red received a special Blu-ray release earlier this year, which included three additional episodes starring Uta and her infamous father, Red-Haired Shanks.

Bloody Escape will premiere in Japan on Jan. 5. Polygon Pictures has not yet specified when the film will be released internationally.
