One Piece: 10 Times An Unlikely Hero Saved The Day

One Piece follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy, who sets out on his journey to find the treasure known as One Piece and become the King of the Pirates. The Straw Hat Pirates travel across the islands in the Grand Line and often end up fighting against the enemies in various countries.

While Luffy is the one who saves the day most of the time, One Piece has its fair share of moments where some unlikely characters stepped up in the most unpredictable fashion. One Piece might follow Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, but they aren't the only characters who get to save the day.

10 Monkey D. Dragon – He Saved Luffy From Dying At Loguetown

Monkey D. Dragon is a great figure who leads the Revolutionary Army. He made his first appearance during the Loguetown arc where he was stopped Buggy from killing Luffy by somehow manipulating the weather. What's more, Dragon also saved Luffy from Smoker moments after and was the only reason the crew even got to the Grand Line.

9 Mr. Prince – He Rescued Most Of His Crewmates By Fooling Sir Crocodile During The Alabasta Arc

Sanji, or Mr. Prince as he liked to call himself during the Alabasta Arc, was the savior of the Straw Hat Pirates when they found themselves trapped in Crocodile's casino in Rainbase. The crew would've died had Sanji not showed up and saved them. Surprisingly, Oda handled it in a way where the fans didn't expect him to swoop in and save the day.

8 Going Merry – She Came To Enies Lobby To Rescue The Straw Hat Pirates And Sail For One Last Time

The Going Merry was the first ship the Straw Hat Pirates they traveled on for most of their adventures in Paradise. Unfortunately, the ship suffered enough damage by the time they arrived on Water 7 and had to be replaced. However, when the crew needed help at Enies Lobby, it was Going Merry who showed up and saved them one last time, saving the day for the crew.

7 Portgas D. Ace – He Saved Monkey D. Luffy From Blackbeard, Who Wanted To Turn Him Over To The Government

Ace was properly introduced in the Alabasta arc and it was mentioned that he was on a great hunt for a subordinate of his, Blackbeard. The two finally met at Banaro Island in the Grand Line, where Blackbeard revealed that he was targeting Luffy.

Ace, realizing that he had to protect his brother at all costs, fought Blackbeard and was handed over to the Government instead. Had Ace not fought him there, Luffy would surely have died.

6 Bartholomew Kuma – He Saved The Crew From The Pacifistas And Admiral Kizaru At Sabaody Archipelago

Also known as the Tyrant, Kuma met the Straw Hat Pirates during the Thriller Bark arc and saw them again immediately after, at Sabaody Archipelago. He was responsible for splitting the crew apart and sending them to different islands across the world. Although it was seen as a villainous act back then, it was later revealed that Kuma was actually saving the crew and helping them escape from the Navy.

5 Boa Hancock – She Snuck Luffy Into Impel Down And Helped Him At Marineford

The Pirate Empress, Boa Hancock was one of Luffy's greatest allies by the end of the first half. Not only did she take Luffy to Impel Down at the risk of her own position, she also helped him at Marineford. Hancock saved him from the Pacifistas, Smoker, Sentomaru, and if that wasn't enough, she even gave him the key to Ace's handcuffs.

4 Bon Clay – He Saved The Impel Down Alliance By Opening The Gates Of Justice

Bon Clay was once a member of Crocodile's Baroque Works, but he had a change of heart and helped the Straw Hat Pirates escape Hina's grasp. At Impel Down, Bon Clay stayed behind and allowed the alliance to escape Magellan by opening the Gates of Justice.

Thanks to his Mane Mane no Mi, he was the only person capable of pulling this off and had it not been for him, Luffy would never have reached Marineford.

3 Shanks – He Came To Marineford To Put An End To The Paramount War

Red-Haired Shanks, one of the Yonko of the New World, showed up at Marineford after the death of Portgas D. Ace and Whitebeard. His arrival was completely out of the blue and thanks to his presence, the war immediately stopped. Shanks not only allowed Luffy to escape, but saved the lives of both Marines and the Whitebeard Pirates by putting an end to the violence which seemed never-ending.

2 Shirahoshi – She Saved Fishman Island From Destruction By Stopping The Noah

Shirahoshi is the daughter of King Neptune, the King of Fishman Island, and one of the most crucial people in the world of One Piece. She is the Ancient Weapon Poseidon and holds the power to control the Sea Kings at will.

Shirahoshi played a pivotal role in the Fishman Island arc by stopping the Noah, which Luffy was trying to stop from hitting Fishman Island. By using her powers, Shirahoshi saved not only Luffy's life but also those of the entire populace of Fishman Island.

1 Pedro – He Sacrificed His Life To Help The Strawhat Pirates Escape From Whole Cake Island

Pedro was the Captain of Nekomamushi's Whale Forest Guardians and a powerful Mink with a bounty of 388 million berries on his head. He came to Whole Cake Island with Luffy in order to help them retrieve Sanji and steal Big Mom's Poneglyphs.

Although they succeeded at doing both, the crew faced imminent death at the hands of Big Mom, Katakuri, and Perospero – but that's when Pedro stepped up and blew himself up to give the crew a chance to escape.
